Colombian Safety Council says that work-related illnesses increased by 7.300%

According to the Safety and Health Observatory of the Colombian Security Council, one of the economic sectors that has been mostly iimpacted by the covid -19 pandemic due to its specific work in patient care, has been the health and social services sector, since this had, in 2020, an increase in qualified occupational diseases of more than 7,300% (35,242 more comparing 2019 and 2020), which are mainly attributed to the effects caused by the virus and characterized as directly qualified occupational diseases.

The Colombian Security Council indicates in its calculations that during the year of the start of the pandemic, a total of 58 deaths of health workers occurred due to causes associated with work, 55 more cases than in 2019.

For its part, the National Institute of Health reported that during 2020, 47,450 Covid-19 infections were recorded among Colombian medical personnel and added that so far in 2021 (between January and May) there have been 9,298 cases of collaborators who have acquired the virus. Taking into account the same considerations raised for the analysis of the economic impact of the pandemic due to the absence and isolation of workers at the national level, the losses in the health sector for the year 2020 exceeded $30,000 million
